9 New Instagram Updates You Should Know About In 2017

1. New Look and Logo

Instagram re-branded itself in 2016 with a new logo and cleaner, sleeker interface. This was a big move but actually really cool that they made this move right before they came out with huge changes to their app.

2. Manage Multiple Accounts

You can add up to 5 accounts on the app and easily switch between them without logging in and out. This is such a time saver if you manage or own multiple accounts.

3. Up To 60 Second Videos

Video is huge in marketing and social media these days and Instagram is making sure it doesn’t fall behind on this trend. You can now upload up to 60 seconds of video on Instagram. This was definitely a good move, the previous 15 seconds of video was so short and 60 seconds allows creators to tell more of the story before telling viewers to jump on another platform to watch the full video.

4. Business Profiles (analytics, boost posts, ad platform upgrades)

This is a massive change made by Instagram to ensure that it continues to be a useful marketing tool for businesses. Business profiles are great, they make it easier than ever to review content analytics, see follower demographics and create ads right on the platform. There is a lot to this feature so be sure do mess around with it and do some further research to really grasp what’s possible with business profiles.

5. API Changes

Instagram updated its API recently which means it’s more difficult for 3 party apps to integrate with the platform. This is a good change because it eliminated some spammy software that was integrating with Instagram. However, we do know of a few good apps that are starting no longer working with Instagram and many people are frustrated. We’re hoping that a couple of the apps we use such as Followers for Instagram and FollowLiker don’t stop working as well.

6. New Algorithm

This change stirred up quite a reaction among marketing experts and users alike. Instagram’s feed is no longer chronological, there is an algorithm that places the best photos in your feed at the top. This is based off many factors including engagement and content. If Instagram can get this right it might be good because if you know how to create good content that gets high engagement, your photos will definitely be seen by your audience. However, we’ve definitely seen a drop in our engagement on Instagram and know of several others who have experienced this as well. We’re hoping they keep adjusting the algorithm until it’s just right.

7. Draft Feature

This feature is actually super useful. You can do your photo editing and save writing the caption for later. Or you can load up a bunch of images and get them ready to upload so you can post them over the next few days. This feature can help you schedule your posts without using a third party app. All you need to do is load up your images and write you captions then set reminders on your phone for when you want to post and you’re good to go.

8. Instagram Stories

Think Snapchat but with more reach! This feature is very similar to Snapchat but it’s way easier to get views on your story while building an audience. Snapchat is great for certain things but unless you already have a huge audience we wouldn’t suggest using it for marketing. That’s one of the reasons we love Instagram, you can build an audience on the platform so we’ve switched to doing all of our stories on Instagram. Since this feature launched, Instagram has been upgrading it ever since. There are so many cool things you can do with Instagram stories such as clickable profile mentions and swipe up to open a link. I’d suggest spending some time messing around with Instagram stories in order to get the hang of it.

9. Instagram Live Video

This was a huge change that came at the end of 2016. Live video is all the craze lately with apps like Periscope and Facebook live seeing so much success. It was only a matter of time until Instagram added this feature. It’s very similar to other live streaming apps and features. You’re able to see how many viewers are tuning in and comments that people add. Live video is a great way to really connect with your audience and hear their struggles.
There you have it, 9 new Instagram updates you should know about in 2017. It’s clear that Instagram is innovating and making sure it stays relevant as a marketing too for businesses in 2017.
