Get Ideas From Your Competitors (Brands / Instagram Pages in Your Niche)
This is a simple, yet powerful concept, however, many people don’t even think about spying on their competitors.
You should have a full understanding of your niche and what other brands are doing well in that space.
Figure out who’s doing well in your industry on Instagram and check out their content. Scroll through their feed and see what type of content is getting good engagement. This will give you some solid ideas of what to post on Instagram!
For many niches, you should be able to find large Instagram pages with at least 100K – 1 Million followers. I’ve even seen some Instagram niche pages with 10 million + followers. These large pages are the best of the best when it comes to creating Instagram content.
Get ideas from brands and these niches pages, then create some epic content similar to theirs but with your unique style.

Get Inspo From the Explore Page
The explore page is basically Instagram’s algorithm showing you a collection of posts that it thinks you might like.
Everyone’s explore page is different and what shows up on it depends on what type of content you consistently engage with.
The posts on there are the best of the best. They are the most highly engaging posts on Instagram so usually the content is really good.
Since these posts are the most viral posts on Instagram it will give you a good idea of what’s trending and what type of content will get good engagement.
In order to use this feature for the benefit of gaining inspiration for what to post on Instagram you should engage with the top brands and accounts in your niche.
Find photos and videos that are really good, have high engagement, and are related to your business, then like and comment on them. By doing this you will be telling your explore page to show you more content like this.
So now when you need inspiration you can just scroll through your explore page and find tons of ideas for what to post on Instagram.
INSTAGRAM FEATURE ALERT: There’s a new feature called ‘Save’ so when you find a post you like you can save it to your profile and not have to screenshot. These posts will be stored so you can view them anytime and only you can see what you’ve saved.

List of Niches and Corresponding Content Ideas
Since we know what works well on Instagram here are a list of niches / business types and the corresponding type of content each one should be posting on Instagram.
Trendy Lifestyle Products
Quality lifestyle photos of your products being used in real life by real people work best. If your products photograph well you can use some good pictures of products without people in them as well.
Example accounts: @sugarbearhair @livelokai
Fashion Brands
Quality lifestyle photos of people wearing your clothes. Avoid posting pictures of just clothes without anyone wearing them. Fashion is huge on Instagram so if you’re in this niche your photos need to be incredibly good!
Example accounts: @lilac.shade @lucaandgrae
Beauty Products
Selfies and close up shots of people wearing your beauty products. Other lifestyle shots and product shots will work as well.
Example accounts: @allmodernmakeup @kyliecosmetics @nyxcosmetics
Magazines / Media Brands
Depending on the type of magazine or media brand it might be appropriate to post quote images. For example, I would not advise fashion, beauty, or travel magazines to post quote images. However, for business and scientific publications it would be appropriate create and post quote / informational images.
Example accounts: @businessinsider @huffingtonpost
Software / Apps / Tech Companies
This one may be slightly tricky depending on who your customers are. I think focusing on quote and information images will work best here. Make sure they are valuable and look good. Lifestyle shots of people using apps will work also.
Example accounts: @headspace @sumome
Coaches / Authors / Speakers
Since these types of personal brands are usually teaching people things I would recommend creating good-looking quote images laid overtop of pictures of you. Stick to using original quotes from your teachings and thoughts about life. Feel free to also mix in pictures of you in real life in order to establish a personal connection with your followers, however, remember these pictures or video still need to look-good or bring value.
Example accounts: @garyvee @tailopez
Personal Brands / Bloggers
Depending on what type of personal brand (this also includes athletes) or blogger you are you might want to use some quote images. If you’re teaching something it may be okay for you to post quote images. It’s up to you and the nature of your audience, however, I wouldn’t recommend fashion or travel bloggers to use quote images. Be sure to post high quality images about your real life as well as about your niche. It’s important to create a personal connection with your followers so they start to know, like, and trust you!
Example accounts: @earthyandy @doyoutravel
Restaurants
Food, food, food! High quality images of food do incredibly well on Instagram, so be sure to make your food look beautiful and tasty. You should also post some lifestyle pictures of people enjoying your restaurant, especially if you have a unique outdoor area.
Example account: @nalubowls @ledlowdtla
Hotels / Other Accommodations
High quality photos of your accommodations, be sure to include a healthy mix of indoor and outdoor pictures. Lifestyle photos of people enjoying your hotel and all the amenities or activities you offer such as a pool, restaurant / bar, and spa. Travel photos related to the area where your hotel is located.
Example accounts: @fourseasons @villasaba10
Location Based Services / Shops / Entertainment
This includes businesses such as spas, nail salons, hair salons, dentists, wineries, clothing boutiques, coffee shops, etc. Always include high quality photos of people after they’ve received a service if it’s beauty related. Definitely lifestyle shots of people at your location and enjoying themselves. Beautiful photos of your products! Pictures of events or things going on at your business location, make sure these still look good.
Example accounts: @nailspapoland @justinwine
